Pahiyangala Cave, Sri Lanka: Where Prehistory Meets Sacred Silence

Have you ever imagined stepping inside a cave inhabited 37,000 years ago? And finding a giant Buddha there too? In the heart of the Sri Lankan jungle, far from the usual tourist trails, lies a place that lets you travel through time: Pahiyangala Cave, also known as Fa-Hien Lena.

The dimensions of Pahiyangala Cave are impressive: 53 meters high, 49 meters wide, and 61 meters deep. The entrance opens majestically among the green rocks of Kalutara, about 122 meters above sea level, and is reached by a panoramic staircase surrounded by tropical forest.

Between Spirituality and Silence

How to Get There

📍 Pahiyangala Cave is located in the Kalutara district, about 40 km from Colombo. The route to get there is evocative: a secondary road crosses rural villages, rice paddies, and plantations, until you reach the village of Yatagampitiya.

🪜 From the entrance, you face a staircase with a panoramic view (prepare comfortable shoes!). Along the way, you might encounter curious monkeys and tropical birds.

Practical Tips

🧗 Wear trekking shoes or comfortable shoes: the path can be slippery in some places.

🧘‍♂️ Respect the silence and spiritual atmosphere of the cave. It is a sacred place.
